*** About Mountain Goats: Mountain goats, known scientifically as Oreamnos americanus, are not true goats but are closely related. They inhabit the steep, rocky regions of North America, from the U.S. Pacific Northwest up into Alaska and across to the western parts of Canada. Adapted to life on the precipices, their cloven hooves with two toes can spread wide to improve balance, and rough pads on the bottom provide the necessary grip on slippery surfaces. These skilled climbers spend most of their time at elevations from 2,000 to 4,000 meters, where they graze on a variety of plant materials. The social structure of mountain goats is quite flexible, often forming groups or bands outside of the breeding season, particularly in winter.
